In Character Information
Name: Madoka Kaname
Series: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica
Canon Standing: Right before she becomes Godoka in the last timeline.
Age: Fourteen
Birthday & Astrology Sign: October 3rd | Libra
Arcana: The Star Arcana
Personality:
Madoka could be described as many things. She is pink, and light, and smiling in most pictures taken out of context for advertisement. Her cheeks are flushed, and her movements are sweet and she's just the epitome of adorable, heart-throbbing cuteness!! And her personality is just as great as that. What you see is what you get, and Madoka definitely gives you more than you can bite off in goodness, and friendship. Because she does genuinely care about you, even if she barely knows you.
Usual Moods:
Madoka is, well, bubbly! She is cheerful and bright, and definitely a go-getter when everything is going well. Not as enthusiastic and forthright about her emotions though, she's a more subdued optimist that quietly and cheerfully says things to boost people up. And even if she finds herself having a low day, she is sure to reassure people she is fine and that whatever is bugging her isn't a big deal (though this is more of her caring, and selfless side worrying about others fawning over her).
Interaction With Others:
In the beginning of the series, she may have regarded them with quiet curiosity but would be too shy to approach them. Especially if she thought they were better than her in anyway. She'd quietly tell them who she was, and would show them her famous kindness while not seeming overbearing; she appreciates their personal space as well as her own. A good example of distancing herself, or stumbling over herself would be the meeting of Homura who intimidated her. She was confused about Homura's presence, and the fact that Homura had some unknown interest in her scared her a little (because why would a cool person want to be tomodachi with me). She grows from bumbling around, but still remains polite while being withdrawn.
As the series progresses, she comes out of her shell more with others. And by the time I bring her in from the canon, she'll be strong, and confident to others. She'll still be incredibly polite, and kind towards them but will have a more open air to her. Though, the 'not-making-her-wish-happen' might hinder that build in self-esteem, she should still know she's made a purpose for herself and will snap that confidence right back and it will radiate in a large circle around her for others. She's now not as prone to shying away, and beating herself up when she meets someone who does something better than her. Her purpose is important to her, and if that person is good at something too, she'll compliment and respect that!
She trusts with all her heart as well, no matter the horrible things done (that she knows of). She automatically has your back on things, and will believe you with all her might, and will even tell you that you're a good person! Because Madoka is not one to distrust others, especially with where her canon point is. She can know the deepest and darkest things, and while not approving, she will be the person to forgive you and tell you that things can still get better and you can still redeem yourself! Because she believes in the humanity in others, and hopes more than anyone alive.
Her general like for humankind makes her happy to help, happy to love, and happy to support.
Interactions With Friends:
Madoka cares. She cares a lot. She is willing to put herself on the line for her friends faster than you can think about the word 'millisecond'. She's self-sacrificial for her friends in their time of need, and will always worry about their well-being while putting the weight of their problems on her. This is seen multiple times with her friend Sayaka, who went down a very bad route, and Madoka stuck with her the whole time. Even when she was not with her, she constantly thought of her safety, and mental status and until she knew she was okay, she would not let it alone. Even when she was at a loss to do, she still tried to find ways to make her friend feel better.
This is so even with people she did not know as well, but seemed strangely fond of! Homura was often a person she was confused, and distraught over, but whenever Homura said something that worried her or did something concerning, Madoka would automatically call her out and tell her that she did not like it! On multiple occasions, she would reassure Homura, and tell her that she was important and she would not like to believe Homura was not actually a bad person (this theory coming from the suspicions of Homura, but she's not the bad guy).
She still tries to show kindness with Homura. In the timelines beforehand, she had automatically made friends with a very timid and shy Homura. She was outright, straightforward and confident in her introduction and it kind of shined on Homura a lot (due to her making a wish to become a magical girl). As the timelines progressed, she still showed an immense trust in Homura, and a sure tied friend that lasted throughout most of them. But the time between them soon separated their friendship, and as her wish to become a magical girl was not made, her confidence still dwindled and remained at an indecisive peek.
How She Feels About Herself:
In the first couple of episodes, the introduction to the Madoka Magica series, Madoka is seen as a shy and timid girl who is very unsure of herself. Her friends seem domineering in personality while she quietly sits in the back and laughs at their shenanigans as this type of relationship doesn't bug her. She's perfectly content with her friendships, but is instead incredibly fickle and down-trodden about how she views herself.
She generally does not have the best self-image, and often sees her traits as being weak, useless, and outright boring. She attributes no good to her hobbies, or strengths but instead focuses on her weaknesses, and how she doesn't seem insanely good at anything. (Very critical, as shown in the 100 Questions Ask given to her, she is even down on herself for not having perfect vision!) She has nothing she can own up to in greatness, and this makes her incredibly wary and extreme on herself. In fact, in the beginning stages of wanting to make her wish, it was almost her dream to become a magical girl just to be of use to the world. In short, to gain an important purpose in life.
In the multiple timelines after she makes her wish, Madoka is seen as confident, sure of herself. Because being a magical girl gives her something to be proud of, so she is decisive, caring, and open to criticism and definitely glowing after being praises about it. She's proud of herself, and is able to use her kindness to the max! Her self-worth, with protecting people being the main key of magical girls, increases.
She thinks she is defined by what she does, or what she has, instead of how warm and caring her heart is. She focuses on her blunders, and doesn't give herself nearly as much credit as she should. And this heavily weighs on her indecisive moments within the series, and it's a little painful to watch but she blooms into a strong, and powerful young girl, emerging from her low self-esteem into someone who knows what they need to do, and knows that time dwindling is not an option.
She is kind, and sweet, but a teenager riddled with reoccurring self-lowering.
In an added note, since Madoka does not like people to suffer or worry, she often hides her own feelings to save others around her. Example of this behavior is scattered throughout the time-line, but can be most proven in her Character Song 'See You Later' where she expresses the knowledge that even though she says she will see them later, she will not in actuality and expresses her loneliness in small intervals. She knows what she had to do, but tries to reassure people with kindness, even if it might be a lie.
All in all, Madoka is a kind, caring, sweet, sacrificial, and courageous person who protects her own, and wants happiness for everyone; one who cannot stand cruelty and is a beacon for life, and hope.
"If someone says that it's wrong to hope, I will tell them they're wrong every time."
